Our Words Matter – 26 Scriptures

Psalm 19:14 is a wonderful prayer to pray daily:
“May the words of my mouth and the meditation of my heart be pleasing in your sight, O LORD, my Rock and my Redeemer.”

Our words can grieve God’s Spirit if they aren’t godly and gracious (Ephesians 4:29-31; Colossians 4:6).

No wonder Proverbs offers so much advice.

Our words should be honest, wholesome, and kind (Proverbs 4:24; Proverbs 8:13; Proverbs 6:16-19; Proverbs 11:9; Proverbs 12:19; Proverbs 12:22; Proverbs 19:5 and 19:9).

We should check our motives before we speak (Proverbs 10:11).

Sometimes it’s best to hold our tongue (Proverbs 10:19; Proverbs 13:3; Proverbs 17:27-28).

We should speak with wisdom (Proverbs 10:21; Proverbs 10:31; Proverbs 12:18; Proverbs 15:14).

It’s important not to betray a confidence, damage relationships, or speak down to people (Proverbs 11:13; Proverbs 17:9; Proverbs 18:23; Proverbs 21:23).

We want our words to bless others, but not with empty flattery (Proverbs 25:11 and Proverbs 31:26; Proverbs 28:23).

Applying these principles will make the words of our mouths and the meditations of our hearts pleasing to the Lord.
